If the New York collections for Spring Summer 2008 had to be summed up in a single word, that word would have to be classy!
With very few exceptions the basic inspiration for the collections was a return to the crisp styling and tailoring of classic American sportswear with a bit of a Bohemian edge. While being completely contemporary and fresh it was also reminiscent of the past. References to the 40’s through to the 90’s were easy to identify on the runways.
This type of approach for more traditional designers such as Carolina Herrarra and Michael Kors is something to be expected.
For more progressive creators such as Marc Jacobs, Maxazria, Lacoste and Vera Wang it becomes somewhat unusual. For the trendy and fashion forward names on the schedule such as Baby Phat, Y-3, Diesel, and Rosa Cha it is almost radical.
The colours for the season were light and bright with lots of metallic and shear materials. There were numerous interesting prints. Hemlines were generally longer than in the past and definitely more ladylike. But most noticeable was how many of these versatile looks could easily be worn for both casual and formal situations.
