The fashion meltdown in swimwear certainly might be contributing to climate change. Swimwear in 2009 has definitely come into its own as fashion and not simply just something to wear to the beach.

Many designs and collections are approaching the level of couture.

The daunting variety of different looks and styles is overwhelming. There are many concurrent trends each of which is robust and complete within itself.

Perhaps the hottest examples are still the monokini and cutaway look. They blend the sophisticated with the sexy which is what the season is all about.

On the glamour side of the spectrum we have the cocktail suit accessorized with jewellery, shear caftans, turbans and high heels.

There is also the metallic look complete with chunky hardware that matches perfectly with a bronze tanned body.

But try as designers may to elevate swimwear to a more serious status, sexy is never far away.

The cut-out treatment with risqué perforations and crisscross straps is really having its moment. In this sense the line between the one piece and two piece has been all but eliminated.

50's inspired

Shear, strapless and belted waists all are very seductive. A perfect body demands a perfect swimsuit no matter how small and small miraculously keeps getting smaller.

Accessorize

There are also a whole bunch of great options for more casual beach wear like the halter top, boy cut bottoms for those that don’t want to wax and fuss every time they even think of going near water.

Retro especially the 1950’s and 1920’s is also huge this season.

Life began in the ocean and over nine tenths of the earth is covered by water.
